The city is New Jersey's southernmost municipality, situated on the Atlantic Ocean, and is known as the Nation's Oldest Seashore Resort. It was incorporated on March 8, 1848, as Cape Island Borough and named after Cornelius Jacobsen Mey. Cape May is a very popular tourist destination and is famous for its beaches, resort hotels, and gingerbread homes. It is also known for Cape May diamonds, which are found on the beaches of Cape May Point. The city hosts various events and festivals, such as the Cape May Music Festival and the Cape May Jazz Festival. It is home to the Cape May Stage, Rutgers University–Camden, and Atlantic Cape Community College. The city is served by Route 109, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, and the Cape May City Rail Terminal.
