It is located at the junction of the Loup River and Platte River, 76 miles northwest of Lincoln and 86 miles northwest of Omaha. U.S. Highways 30 and 81 across the Loup River connect the city to the neighboring towns and cities. It was settled in 1856 and named after the city in Ohio. The area was originally inhabited by Omaha, Pawnee, Ponca, and other Native American tribes.

Columbus is home to Glur's Tavern, the oldest tavern in Nebraska. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 30, 1975. According to local history, Buffalo Bill once visited Glur's Tavern in Columbus, Nebraska. Other local attractions include Pawnee Plunge Water Park, Columbus Area Children's Museum, Andrew Jackson Higgins National Memorial, Fountain Square Park, and Van Berg Municipal Golf Course. The city is known as the birthplace of Andrew Jackson Higgins, an American businessman.
