Concord serves as the capital city of New Hampshire and the seat of Merrimack County. Located on the Merrimack River in the south-central part of the state and 16 miles north of Manchester, the city is also one of the most populous in the state. It was settled in 1659 and incorporated in 1733. Penacook Lake, a 362-acre lake, is the largest lake in Concord and the city's main water supply. The State of New Hampshire is the top employer in Concord. The city is an important education and transportation center. It is served by Concord Municipal Airport, New Hampshire Route 9, Interstates 89, 93, and 393, and U.S. Routes 3 and 202. It is home to the University of New Hampshire School of Law, New Hampshire Technical Institute, and Granite State College.

The Upham-Walker House at 18 Park Street and the Merrimack County Bank building at 214 North Main Street are both located within the district.

- McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is a science museum with a gift shop and an observatory located at 2 Institute Drive. It features interactive exhibits.
- Capitol Center for the Arts, located at 44 S Main Street, hosts Broadway revivals and concerts.
