Downtown Boston is the central business district of the city. It is a busy urban area dotted with high-rise buildings and is home to numerous corporate headquarters, luxury hotels, department stores, pubs, restaurants, and notable landmarks. Boston’s Financial District is located within Downtown Boston and features many important buildings, including the Custom House Tower, One Financial Center, 125 High Street, the First National Bank Building, and Post Office Square. The district is also home to major companies, investment management firms, banks, and hotels.

Government Center is also located in downtown Boston. This area is home to various government offices and courthouses and is served by Government Center Station. It is home to Boston City Hall, the seat of Boston’s city government and a famous example of Brutalist architecture. Located at 1 City Hall Square, the building was completed in 1968. It houses the offices of the Mayor of Boston and the Boston City Council. Other notable buildings in the Government Center area include the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Federal Building, City Hall Plaza, Center Plaza, and the Sears’ Crescent and Sears’ Block.

Downtown Boston is bordered by some of the city’s key neighborhoods, such as the North End, Beacon Hill, Chinatown, and the Financial District. It is home to many of Boston’s most popular attractions. The Massachusetts State House, located at 24 Beacon Street, was built in the 18th century and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It serves as the seat of government for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Faneuil Hall, designed by John Smibert in 1742, is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. It is part of Boston National Historical Park and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Boston Common, one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city, is a large public park covering 50 acres. Dating back to the 17th century, it remains a popular gathering place for both locals and visitors.
