Kabul, Afghanistan

Kabul (کابل) is the largest city in Afghanistan, serving as both the capital of the country and the capital of Kabul Province. It is located in the east-central part of the country and is part of the Middle East region on the Asian continent. Kabul is approximately 320 miles south of the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border and about 170 miles west of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The distance to Islamabad is roughly 230 miles. Nearby major Afghan cities include Kandiz, Kandahar, Jalalabad, and Peshawar.

The neighborhoods of Kabul include Mosahi, Paghman, Kalakan, Chartot, Surobi, Tagab, and others. The city is situated in a narrow area near the Hindu Kush mountain range to the northwest. The Darya-e Kabul (Kabul River) flows across the city from west to east, with the city center located in the southwestern part of the metropolitan area. Kabul is divided into 22 administrative districts.

The city is situated approximately 5,875 feet above sea level, covering a total area of around 400 square miles, which is large by Afghanistan’s standards. To the northeast of Kabul is the Nuristan Forest Natural Preserve, a significant natural park. The Kabul River Dam, located about 22 miles northeast of the city center, is another notable landmark.
