Leadville is one of Colorado's 12 statutory cities, located within the Rocky Mountains, in the central part of the state, United States. It is the seat of Lake County, as well as its only incorporated municipality. It is also the highest incorporated city in the country at an elevation of 10,152 feet (3,094 meters). Leadville grew as a mining town. It was founded by Horace Tabor and August Meyer in 1877 and incorporated on February 18, 1878. The Leadville Historic District has been designated as a National Historic Landmark District since 1961. Tourist attractions and historical landmarks in the city include the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, House With the Eye Museum, Tabor Home Museum, Leadville Railroad, Tabor Opera House, Ice Palace Park, Mineral Belt Trail, Huck Finn Ice Rink, Valley View Observation Site, Sugar Loaf Dam, Turquoise Lake, Leadville Motocross Park, and Leadville Visitors Center. It is home to Colorado Mountain College Leadville. Leadville-Lake County Regional Airport is located 3 miles away from the city center. US 24 and State Highway 91 serve the city.
