It is within the Detroit metropolitan area and serves as the seat of Macomb County. Situated in the south-central part of the county, it was settled by Christian Clemens at the end of the 18th century and incorporated in 1879 as a city. The city was known for its bathhouses and many famous people like Jack Dempsey, Mae West, and Clark Gable visited there to enjoy mineral baths. Today, there are only a few places to offer mineral baths in the city, like the Olympia Salon & Spa. Local attractions that both tourists and residents enjoy are Anton Art Center, the Emerald Theatre, Crocker House Museum and Gardens, and Mount Clemens Ice Arena. Interstate 94 serves the area.
