New Bedford is a coastal city in Bristol County, southeastern Massachusetts, United States, situated on the Acushnet River and 31 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island. The area was originally inhabited by the Wampanoag. It was settled by English Quakers in 1652 and incorporated as a city in 1847. New Bedford Regional Airport and Interstate 195 serve the city. The city is bordered by Dartmouth to the west, Freetown to the north, Acushnet and Fairhaven to the east, and Buzzards Bay to the south. Attractions and historical landmarks in the city include Acushnet Cedar Swamp State Reservation, New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, Harbor Walk, Allen C. Haskell Public Gardens, Fort Rodman, Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum, Prince Henry the Navigator Monument, and East Beach. The city is home to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth - School for Marine Science and Technology and Bridgewater State University Flight Center. There are also several historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places in New Bedford, such as Buttonwood Park Historic District, County Street Historic District, Merrill's Wharf Historic District, etc.
