New Mexico is one of the southwestern states of the United States, located in the southwestern region of the country. It borders Mexico to the south and covers an area of nearly 121,600 square miles, making it one of the five largest states in the U.S. Santa Fe, the state capital, is located in the north-central part of New Mexico. Albuquerque is the largest city in the state and is situated near the center, where two major transportation routes, Interstate 40 and Interstate 25, intersect. The city of El Paso, which is part of Texas, is located close to New Mexico’s southern border and lies along the U.S.-Mexico border.

New Mexico has an almost square shape and is known for its dry climate and arid landscapes. At the same time, the state is home to national forests, including Gila National Forest, Carson National Forest, Santa Fe National Forest, and Cibola National Forest, which are among the largest in the region. The state is home to many historic monuments of national importance, some dating back to Ancestral Puebloan cultures and other early periods. These monuments include Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, Capulin Volcano National Monument, Aztec Ruins National Monument, Petroglyph National Monument, Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, El Morro National Monument, El Malpais National Monument, and many others.
