Omdurman is a large city and an important social and cultural life center of Khartoum state in central Sudan. The city is located on the banks of the Nile River, very close to the state capital city. Omdurman was established in the early Middle Ages near a small tomb, and the name of the city comes from the expression "The Mother of Durman". By the end of the 19th century the settlement has developed into a large town which had to witness numerous battles and rulers. Despite quite dry and hot climate, the city is thriving and its population has been recently increasing, reaching 2.7 million people. The community is multi-cultural and multi-religious, with a large number of Muslim population. Omdurman is known as a center of enlightenment and education, with a few very large and good universities located there.
