One of the largest cities in New York State, Rochester is located in the northwestern part of the state. It was established centuries ago near the southern shores of Lake Ontario and is part of the large metropolitan zone Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse. The city’s total area is estimated to be close to 37 square miles, and downtown Rochester is situated about 3.5 miles south of Lake Ontario.

Rochester is built along the banks of the Genesee River, set in a pleasant small valley. The downtown area is located about 75 miles east of Buffalo and 90 miles west of Syracuse. New York City, the state’s largest city, lies a little over 300 miles southeast of Rochester. The city is also relatively close to the US-Canada border, with Toronto located about 165 miles west. Rochester is known for its affordable cost of living and an active social and cultural life.
