Syracuse, NY, USA

Syracuse is a large city located in the northern part of the state of New York, about 16 miles from the shores of Lake Ontario. It is one of the state’s five largest cities and a center of educational and business life in New York State. With an area of about 25 square miles, the city is not very large. It is situated in the central part of the state.

The city was named after an Italian settlement with the same name on the island of Sicily. American Syracuse has a great location near Onondaga Lake. It lies about 82 miles east of Rochester, slightly over 150 miles east of Buffalo, around 255 miles north of Philadelphia, and about 240 miles northeast of New York City.

Syracuse is part of what is known as the Finger Lakes Region, famous for its green landscapes and quite humid climate. The city lies on the low plains of the state, with an average elevation of about 400-420 feet above sea level.

It is a former industrial city whose economy has recently shifted toward the services and tourism sectors. The central districts are filled with numerous offices of financial, recruiting, consulting, IT, travel, social, and other companies. Nearby towns and communities include Westvale, Split Rock, Onondaga Hill, Nedrow, Manlius, Fayetteville, and East Syracuse, among others.

Syracuse is also an important transportation hub, where several national highways and Interstate roads intersect. There is a large railway station in the city used for both cargo and passenger operations.
