It is the seat of St. Johns County and a part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. It was established by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés on September 8, 1565, and named for Saint Augustine of Hippo. It is considered the oldest city in the country. It is a popular destination with its beautiful beaches, parks, museums, historical churches, and Spanish colonial architecture.
