Founded by Quakers in the early 19th century, Salem is a historic city located in Columbiana County, Ohio. It is situated about 68 miles southeast of Cleveland and 69 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Named after Salem, New Jersey, the city is easily accessible via U.S. Route 62 and Ohio State Routes 9, 14, 173, and 344. Throughout the 19th century, Salem emerged as a significant hub for abolitionism and the women’s rights movement, hosting the annual Anti-Slavery Fair and the 1850 Ohio Women’s Convention.

Salem is home to Kent State University at Salem, established in 1962 as a regional campus of Kent State University. The city also hosts Allegheny Wesleyan College (AWC), a private liberal arts institution founded in 1957 that offers a variety of undergraduate degree programs.

The city features numerous historic landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Daniel Howell Hise House, the Burchfield Homestead, and the First Global Methodist Church. Another prominent site, the John Street House, a stop on the Underground Railroad, is located at 631 North Ellsworth Avenue (latitude 40.904738, longitude -80.8573498). Built in 1838 in the Italianate/Neoclassical style, it is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Salem contains several notable historic districts as well, such as the Salem Downtown Historic District and the South Lincoln Avenue Historic District.
