It was incorporated on September 12, 1905. The area was originally inhabited by the Chumash people for thousands of years. The city is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Santa Maria River to the north, Orcutt to the south, and the San Rafael Mountains to the east. Santa Maria is famous for its vineyards and wineries. Local attractions include Waller Park, Santa Maria Museum of Flight, Rancho Bowl, Costa de Oro Winery, Sierra Madre Vineyard, Hi-Way Drive-In, Santa Maria Country Club, Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum, Rockin' Jump Santa Maria, Natural History Museum, Boomers Santa Maria, and Preisker Park. Santa Maria Airport is located to the south of the city center. Vandenberg Space Force Base is situated about 17 miles south of Santa Maria.
