Scranton is a city in northeast Pennsylvania, United States, and serves as the seat of Lackawanna County. It was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1856, and as a city on April 23, 1866. The city was named after American industrialist and politician George W. Scranton. Scranton is also known by several nicknames, including Electric City, Anthracite Capital of the World, and All America City.
Located 77 miles north of Allentown, 111 miles northwest of Newark, and 124 miles northwest of Philadelphia, the city is served by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport and major highways such as Interstates 81 and 476, and U.S. Route 11. Today, Scranton is considered the cultural capital of its region, home to numerous historical landmarks, museums, galleries, and recreational facilities.
