The town is located less than 5 miles south of Hartford, the capital of Connecticut. Interstate 91 serves the town. Old Wethersfield Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1970. It is the largest historic district in the state. The town was settled on October 1634, incorporated on February 21, 1637, and named for the village of Wethersfield in Essex, England.
