Garden State is an American romantic comedy-drama movie, written and directed by Zach Braff. Starring Braff, Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Weston, Jackie Hoffman, and Ian Holm, the film premiered at Sundance on January 16, 2004, was released on July 28, 2004 (United States), and won the 2005 Film Independent Spirit Awards for "Best First Feature". It follows a struggling actor Andrew Largeman who returns home for his mother's funeral. Garden State was filmed in writer and director Zach Braff's hometown of South Orange, New Jersey. Wallington, Cranford, Mahwah, Livingston, Newark, and New York City were also among the filming locations.
