Big Rapids, commonly known as B.R., is a city in central Michigan, USA, and serves as the county seat of Mecosta County. It is located along the banks of the Muskegon River in the northwestern part of the county, about 56 miles north of Grand Rapids. The city was first settled in 1855 and officially incorporated in 1869.
Big Rapids is home to Ferris State University, a public university founded in 1884 and located at 1201 S State Street. The city is also home to Crossroads Charter Academy. Transportation to and from the city is provided by U.S. Route 131 and Roben-Hood Airport. In addition, the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail, a 92-mile-long state park and recreational trail, passes through Big Rapids.
The city offers a variety of accommodation options and features several attractions. Hemlock Park is a scenic community park along the river, offering hiking areas, playgrounds, sports facilities, and a live music venue. Located north of the city, Northend Riverside Park includes hiking trails, restrooms, and opportunities for outdoor activities such as kayaking. Big Rapids also has a golf facility, Clear Lake Golf Club, located at 14777 150th Avenue.
