Halifax, Canada

Halifax is a large city located in the province of Nova Scotia in the southeasternmost part of Canada. Situated on the southern shores of Bedford Basin, Halifax is the capital of the province and lies directly opposite the city of Dartmouth. Administratively, both cities are included in the same municipality.

Geography and Location of Halifax

Halifax is one of the principal business centers of the Atlantic region of Canada. The city covers an area close to 90 square miles and is located about 600 miles east of the country’s capital, Ottawa. Saint John lies about 130 miles northwest of Halifax, and Boston is approximately 410 miles southwest. Halifax city center is in the eastern part of the metropolitan area, overlooking the waters of Bedford Basin. The downtown area includes districts such as the South End and the North End.

Natural Areas and Parks in Halifax

The total area of the Halifax municipality is very large, including portions of natural parks such as Long Lake Provincial Park, Blue Mountain–Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area, and other smaller municipal parks. A wonderful location, amazing Victorian houses in the city center near modern skyscrapers and office buildings, excellent modern facilities, and numerous landmarks such as Fenwick Tower, the Public Gardens of Halifax, York Redoubt National Historic Site, and Dartmouth Commons are the main characteristics of Halifax.
