The capital city of Canada and its administrative center, Ottawa, is situated in the southeastern part of the country, in the province of Ontario. Ottawa is a historic city, established in the late 18th century, and named after the Ottawa River, which flows through the city.

By the late 19th century, it had become an important political and educational center, and it was officially designated as the capital of Canada in 1857 (with the decision implemented in the middle of the 19th century). Today, Ottawa is a center for business, government, commerce, transportation, and social life.

Ottawa is considered one of the safest cities in Canada, with high living standards and a low unemployment rate. Residents are fond of sports, and the city offers a large number of modern sports facilities.

Historic sites and attractions in Ottawa include Parliament Hill, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, Billings Estate National Historic Site, the Orange Art Gallery, the St. Laurent Shopping Centre, Mooney's Bay Park and Beach, the Dominion Arboretum, the National Arts Centre, Major's Hill Park, and the National Gallery of Canada, among others. Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport is located approximately 10 km (6 miles) south of the city center.
