Meerut, the "Sports City Of India", is a wonderful old historic city located in the Upper Ganges-Yamuna Doab, the western part of Uttar Pradesh, northern India, and about 45 miles northeast of New Delhi. In its early times, the settlement used to be the center of the kingdom of Mayasura, an ancient local empire. Today, it is a center of education, cinema, culture, and festivals. Its economy is based on the production of musical instruments and sports goods. The city is home to Meerut University (Chaudhary Charan Singh University), Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, and IIMT University. In addition, the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against British colonial rule began on 10 May 1857 in Meerut.
