The seat of Jones County, Laurel is known as the City Beautiful, located northeast of Ellisville in the north-central part of the county, Mississippi, southeastern United States. Incorporated in 1882, it is the main city of the Laurel Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city is home to South Central Regional Medical Center which was founded in 1952. Masonite International Corporation, one of the top employers in the city, was founded by William H. Mason in 1925 in Laurel and today it is headquartered in Tampa. Mississippi's first art museum, the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art is also in Laurel, situated at 565 N. Fifth Avenue. The museum was established in 1923.

Major highways that run through the city are Interstate 59, U.S. Route 11, U.S. Route 84, and Mississippi Highway 15. Laurel Train Station also serves the area.
