Peabody, nicknamed "Tanner City", is a small city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States, situated in the northeastern part of the state and 16 miles away from Downtown Boston. The area was originally inhabited by the Naumkeag. The city was settled by English colonists in 1626, incorporated in 1916, and named for George Peabody, an American financier. It is bordered by Danvers to the north, Lynn to the south, Lynnfield to the southwest, Middleton to the northwest, and Salem to the east. The city is home to Salem Country Club, which hosted the 1954 and 1984 U.S. Women's Open Championships, and the 2001 and 2017 U.S. Senior Open Championships. The Northshore Mall, located near the junction of Route 128 and Route 114, is also in the city. It is one of the largest shopping centers in the region. Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1 serve the city. Tourist attractions in Peabody include John Proctor House, Smith Barn, Ross Memorial Park, George Peabody House Museums, CuriousCity Children's Museum, Moore-Hill House, Meadow Golf Course-Peabody, and Peabody Historical Society.
