A coastal city of Thuringowa is situated in the north eastern Queensland, Australia, close to the city of Townsville. It used to be a small village of the local fishermen until the mid 19th century when European settlers arrived to the area. It is supposed that the name of the city is derived from the name of the German region of Thuringia. During the second half of the 20th century the city was still a very small town with the population hardly over 2 thousand people. However for the last 40 years the population has been increasing drastically and currently Thuringowa is a home to more than 65 thousand people. It is a modern community with a large number of suburbs and small village surrounding the municipal area.
