Psycho is a psychological horror, mystery, thriller film directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock, written by Joseph Stefano. It is based on Robert Bloch's book of the same name published in 1959. The film stars Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, John Gavin, Vera Miles, and Martin Balsam. It was released on September 8, 1960 (United States) and nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Leigh and Best Director for Hitchcock. Psycho is considered to be the earliest example of slasher films as well as the greatest films of all time. The film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1992. Psycho was filmed on the Universal Studios Hollywood. Filming also took place in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles; State Route 99, California, and Title and Trust Building in Phoenix, Arizona.
