Sense and Sensibility is a period drama film directed by Ang Lee, written by Emma Thompson, and based on Jane Austen's classic novel of the same name. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, Marianne and Elinor, who, after their father’s death, are forced to leave their childhood home, Norland Park, and move with their mother to a modest cottage. As they navigate their new life, they experience love, romance, and heartbreak in the rigid society of early 19th-century England.
Starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, James Fleet, Tom Wilkinson, Harriet Walter, Gemma Jones, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman, the film was released on December 13, 1995, in the United States. It became both a critical and commercial success, grossing $135 million worldwide and winning an Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published.
Sense and Sensibility was shot in Devon, Wiltshire, and Norfolk, England. Filming also took place in Greenwich, London. Efford House in Devon was used as Barton Cottage, where the Dashwood family starts their new life. The scenes of Marianne and Brandon's wedding took place at St Mary's Church, Berry Pomeroy which is listed on the Heritage at Risk Register. Old Royal Naval College, National Maritime Museum, Compton Castle, and Wonwell Beach were also among the filming locations.
